Cargoes which should be temperature controlled during the trip at sea, can be shipped in so called reefer containers. Those isolated containers are equipped with its own refrigerating machinery and is running on electrical power supplied by the ship or the terminal. The reefer container is able to maintain a constant temperature, unless the cargo has been stuffed in the container at a different temperature. It is important to know that a reefer container is designed to maintain temperature, not to freeze or heat cargoes.
Usually reefer containers are able to maintain temperatures between -25*C and +25*C, however, there are also reefer containers which can go as low as -60*C for special cargoes, such as tuna fish. Furthermore there are reefer containers which are equipped to influence humidity and the oxygen level to adjust the riping proces.
